SPEAK YOUR MIND
"Does the distance one travels from center make one more free
to move?"
"No. Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as
metaphor has two parts: form and interpretation. Of course,
the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom,
as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning.
Freedom is being the bricoleur, the mason."

Sounds, M:R

In Response To: Marathon : Resurrection Improvements *PIC* (Zerostar)
Hey Zerostar,
Ever since way back when, I've always played Marathon with headphones, which has made me pretty sensitive to sound and music. (For some reason, the M:R music doesn't play on my system, 9.2.1, but that's another story).
As far as "improving" M:R sounds, I feel that:
•Adding simple ambient sounds, such as the muted engine sound on Arrival is very cool. Soundwise, the addition of ambient sounds in M2/Inf was imho one of its greatest improvements.
•Changing current sounds is tricky. An early beta version of a net map (was it HoP?) had platforms with the UT "platform sound," something which always made me feel... uncomfortable, until the sound was finally replaced by the original sound from M1.
I'm not the world's greatest purist with Marathon, but I think changing the sounds runs some pretty serious risks. Yeah, the original, clunky 8-bit Public Domain soundbytes may not be the best out there, but they're what we associate with the game.
As far as bob sounds --- Doug did such a great job with them, why fuck with that? The only additions I'd really like to see is the implementation of unused Bob sounds which Doug recorded. I know there was at least one floating around the net, an exclamation "I'm not assimilated!" and judging from the M1 developments notes from http://arrival.bungie.org there must have been many others.
I feel that the M:R team has done a pretty flawless job of carefully juggling the "keep it original Marathon" and "improve Marathon" elements, and I suppose my only wish would be that if/when teams start making M:R for M2, Inf, and the pillar-scenarios (Tempus, Evil, Rubicon), that they would be able to dance as well as Unpfhorgiven in that minefield.
That said, I do agree with some of your points, the main one being the "and now they're pissed" screen, but I think that criticism could have been put a bit more diplomatically hehe. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that one is temporary.
You're clearly a very talented guy, zerostar, thanks for wanting to contribute.
Cheers,
-gh
