SPEAK YOUR MIND

"Does the distance one travels from center make one more free to move?"

"No. Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as metaphor has two parts: form and interpretation. Of course, the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom, as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning. Freedom is being the bricoleur, the mason."

In Response To: Marathon : Resurrection Improvements *PIC* (Zerostar)

First off, the M:R team has always been open to capable contributors. If anyone wishes to help out they are welcome to, provided two things:

1. Quality matches or exceeds our current standards
2. They contribute with material we actually need in order to complete the project.

With that said, lets move on.

: MAIN SCREEN - I think the main opening needs a HUGE
: OVERHAUL. Those desktop images that is on the
: Resurrection site seem more than adequet for an
: impressive opening screen. My favorite is Maniac's
: white & blue one. The blue sun one would look
: great, too. That would sure make things look more
: sharp.

This is minimal and somewhat of a low priority. The original image of that text at proper resolution is actually very nice (I can show you the full rez version), however UT has to scale and dither for all the various resolutions and any image would look "crappy" in that instance.

: SOUNDEFFECTS - Some of the sounds ported from the
: original Marathon are unnecessary when we could use
: the same sounds from M2 or MInfinty (which sound a
: whole lot better). For example, the S'pht attack
: sounds currently sound like an old Atari game. I also
: have a collection of sounds from Cowboy Bebop. These
: aren't low quality, held-a-mic-to-the-tv sounds. These
: are direct line-in digital recordings at CD quality,
: isolated to use for customized placement.

This is a recreation of M1 so the sounds need to resemble those of M1. They don't need to the same, but they need to resemble it. At the same time, we need original material..not stuff from Cowboy Bepop or anything else. The only sounds we have permission to use are those from the original Bungie series. You are more than welcome, rather encouraged actually, to make new sounds. We've been looking for a sound FX guy since the inception of the project..but those are the requirements.

: VOICE RECORDINGS - I've directed an entire cast for my
: original anime movie. I have the equipment, software,
: and know-how to bring a new level of BOB sounds.

Read above. Please do them. :)

: TERMINALS - Okay. In 2002, with the current technology,
: Marathon's terminals are just plain bland and boring.
: I want to create quicktime animations for terminal
: logos and side images (ie, a 3d animated, tech-system
: logon/logoff for the Marathon networks, Durandal,
: Leela, and Tycho.) If quicktime becomes too large of a
: file format, then perhaps we could integrate Flash
: into the terminals. I have Flash-MX by Macromedia, and
: can develop elaborate terminal designs. If we would go
: with Flash & Quicktime, this could really be a
: powerful combination, utilizing interactive menus and
: enhancing the boring reading part of Marathon. Let's
: face it, some people just want carnage. (I personally
: enjoy the story, but in this day & age, green text
: just doesn't cut it anymore).

Again, what we do needs to resemble the original. Again, it doesn't need to be exact, but needs to be in the same scope of things. The other thing to keep in mind is that whatever appears on the screen is generated by the UT engine...that means no QuickTime, Flash or anything else. As much as it would be nice to have fancy terminals, I don't see this being very feasable (though the coders have the say here). At the same time..the point of the terminals is to convey the story..they have to be simple and to the point. Keep in mind that adding a lot of extra graphics and animations will increase the size of the uMOD..in it's current state with just MP and SP demo the file is already 120MBs (!!!)

: MUSIC - I've spent the last two years on a massive techno
: album. I think it would fit well with Marathon.
: They're in MP3 format, and can be compressed more
: (right now, they're at a premium compression). I just
: bought Unreal Tournament a few days ago (so I could
: play M:R), so I have no idea how UT level-building
: works. I heard Unreal's music and it didn't sound like
: cheezy MIDI to me, it sounded like a compressed .wav
: or mp3 of a professional music track (even though its
: in its own format already). I hope Unreal can utilize
: mp3 or someone on Team Unphforgivn can convert mp3 to
: whatever Unreal would hence use.

I've said this about a hundred times before..the problem isn't so much with people that write music, or having access to excellent music tracks (which we do)..the problem is that UT needs tracked music. If you have the means to write really good tracked music, then PLEASE, by all means..DO THIS. We'd love it! Writing an MP3 and then making the whole thing an instrument doesn't cut it either..so...the short story is..if you can TRACK music for M:R then start now! lol

: I recommend them all and want to contribute them all,
: royalty free of course. Just so long as I get credit.
: I think they fit the style of Marathon perfectly.

See above.

Thank you for offering to help. The main things we need help with at the moment are SFX, _TRACKED_ music and especially mapping. These are important to bring the project to a state of completion. We have many other dies (and others do to) about ways to improve the project, but we must focus on completing the core stuff first.

So, if you can do sFX and track music...we're all ears!
