SPEAK YOUR MIND

"Does the distance one travels from center make one more free to move?"

"No. Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as metaphor has two parts: form and interpretation. Of course, the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom, as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning. Freedom is being the bricoleur, the mason."

My impression of M:R is that it will go above and beyond the original Marathon, adding features that couldn't or wouldn't be done at the time. Using the UT engine is definitely going above and beyond, but why stop there? Footsteps greatly increase the immersiveness of the environments. With the motion sensor in the game, they aren't that useful for multiplayer. However, I believe the Marathon games (maybe not the first one) gave you the option of turning off the motion sensor.
Footsteps can really add a lot. In Half-Life: Opposing Force (damn Sierra for cancelling the port to Mac!) you fight a detachment of black ops troopers in a warehouse. Hearing their echoing footsteps really increases the intensity of the gamplay.
