SPEAK YOUR MIND

"Does the distance one travels from center make one more free to move?"

"No. Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as metaphor has two parts: form and interpretation. Of course, the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom, as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning. Freedom is being the bricoleur, the mason."

: I think that the footsteps are toast - except where it
: adds to the plot. The problem with footstep sounds,
: IMHO, is while they add to the atmosphere when you
: initially hear them, you get used to hearing them and
: eventually they even become tedious.

I dunno -- while it would be a TON of work to create sounds for the different environments, the effect does't become tedious (imho); especially if it's done well.

The Wheel of Time, a game by Legend Entertainment, made very good use of texture sounds and it really added to the environment. of course, it worked best when you had different kinds of textures on the same map (ground, rocky paths, stone steps, etc.)

one way to 'improve' the sounds would to be have them silenced when a character is simply walking (also known as sneaking). it could tie into the motionsensor that way (a person that's standing still or moving slowly is less apt to be seen/heard)

monsters, though, should really only have one footstep sound each. no need to kill yourselves over the effect. hehe.
