It was a colony ship fer chrissakes. How do you suppose they were going to build a colony made up of same-sex partnerships? Adoption?
Presumably on the day of the attack all of the Marathon's female crew members were down on the planet watching the Top Gun DVD with the volleyball scene set on infinite replay.
