Okay, I had a chance to re-work this. I've been working on another Marathon-related project which I'll probably share here once it's finished. It took a while but I got it under 750 polygons, and I was able to remove the need for an alpha map. Again, the texturing is just flat colors for now.

Sometimes we need a little push to make something better; this is a definite improvement over the first version in my view.
