SPEAK YOUR MIND

"Does the distance one travels from center make one more free to move?"

"No. Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as metaphor has two parts: form and interpretation. Of course, the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom, as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning. Freedom is being the bricoleur, the mason."

In Response To: Re: Crosshairs (pierrot)

It is rare that the M:R forum encounters personal affronts and spats of this nature and I would really prefer that it continue to be rare, if non-existent, please.

That said, first of all, thank you for taking the time to download, play, enjoy and compliment us on our efforts. For every person that posts, there are probably 10 or more than never do, so thanks for doing that.

On the issue of crosshairs: believe it or not, there are people that feel very strongly on both sides of the equation. There are players in the Unreal (and other more modern FPS titles) that are very accustomed to and prefer things like crosshairs (not the only such feature), and they try and make an argument that since M:R is a UT mod, it should have all the standard UT features applied. Conversely, on the other side of the argument, you have the Marathon purists who for their own reasons, be they nostalgia, or maybe even just the challenge that the lack of crosshairs brings, really argue for the removal of these, particularly since this is, to them, the sacred 'Marathon'. In between these two camps there are thousands of people who have their opinions one way or another, but do not feel nearly as strongly, or might even be indifferent. The decision to leave or remove crosshairs ultimately came down to several discussions with the people that would implement the (lack of) feature. As much as a project like this is a democracy, at some point, the person doing the work has the final say, and because this was a volunteer project, there's little weight any one member has when it comes to vetoing someone else's work.

Furthermore, in a situation where nobody's paying anyone else's bills, one could argue that you can go back to the topic of discussion indefinitely, and this is simply not practical..once something was decided and done...it was done. There are literally thousands of details and issues that could be argued to no end in a project of this size, and the crosshairs is an issue with no clear winner. Whichever way you decide, one side will get snubbed. I'm sorry that you're on the side that got snubbed, but on the upside.."your" side won other arguments...such as having the ability to jump, or even lift jump in multi-player games.

What I'm trying to say is that many decisions had to be made that would inherently not please everyone...we tried our best, but some things just had to turn out one way or another. I hope you enjoy the rest of the game, and as low-tech as it may sound, many have found that placing a small stuck-on marker on your screen can alleviate the lack of crosshair problem.
