Here in Canada:
6 years of elementary school
5 years of secondary school
That, everyone needs to do. Then you can go to college, either to go work after (3 years), or as pre-university (2 years). I did my pre-university in sciences (Maths, physics, chemistry, and biology). Then I took some computer sciences courses still at college. I found I was losing my time there, having to do some really easy VB stuff before I could do anything interresting, and decided to take the winter off to learn C++ all by myself. I'm still working heavily on my first program, a hotline client for windows. It's getting near 10k lines of code.
I've also been accepted in software engineering at university for this fall.
