SPEAK YOUR MIND

"Does the distance one travels from center make one more free to move?"

"No. Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as metaphor has two parts: form and interpretation. Of course, the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom, as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning. Freedom is being the bricoleur, the mason."

In Response To: New Mappers: Read this!! (Barballs)

What Barballs said is right on the money. It is impossible to set up a coordinated system online to unequivocally keep track of everything without the cooperation of those involved.

There are two important things:

1. Don't be discouraged to work on a map that someone else is already working on. It is a little reduntant to do the same thing twice, however, so first check here and see if someone's already working on that map. It is important for those who DO work on maps, to say so and keep an eye on this forum, to jump in when someone wants to start working on the same thing, in order to coordinate that work. If nobody appears to be working on a map, start! Heh..The idea is simple...This whole project, from its inception, is a collaboration. The only chance of it getting done right is if it remains a collbaorative work, and that stays true for this stage as well.

2. If you know (with certainty) that one person (or more) are working on a map, try to pick up something that isn't being worked on. If we have the fortunate situation that _every_ map is already being worked on, then jump in to ask who needs help on what map, but lets try to avoid focusing on just some maps and ignoring others.

Lastly, with dilligence and cooperation these issues actually iron themselves out, even online. The key is to stay in touch in a _common_ place and to frequently check in. You will find that motivatation and progress feeds on itself...If someone is making progress on one map, it gives enthusiams and motivation to the rest.

I also realize the virtue of a real-time method of common communication (i.e. IRC). If you have a place that you think is suited for that, say so, or if you'd rather I set up an IRC server, I can look into that. However, if you pick something, keep it. Consistency and stability is very important :)

Good luck to everyone, and remember that we're here to offer as much assistance as required.
