SPEAK YOUR MIND

"Does the distance one travels from center make one more free to move?"

"No. Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as metaphor has two parts: form and interpretation. Of course, the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom, as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning. Freedom is being the bricoleur, the mason."

: However, I personally don't think I want a re-do of
: Marathon, Darandal, etc. that I may not even recognize
: as Marathon. What made Marathon "Marathon"
: was Marathon itself. If I wanted another Doom, Quake
: or Unreal Tourney then I'd simply play or purchase
: them. I mean, completely changing the weapons, the
: sounds, the characters is like creating something that
: isn't Marathon, right?

: I'm just afraid when you're finished, when your Marathon
: renewal is completed, it will not be anything remotely
: recognizable as the Marathon we obviously all knew and
: loved.

: Create a newer unrecognizable Marathon simply for
: multiplayer "coolness?" I think not...
: That's Marathon blasphemy!

I hope you have checked out Marathon: Aleph One (see link below). Aleph One *is* Marathon, through and through, except that it has OpenGL rendering, optional high-resolution replacement textures, Lua scripting, latency-hiding Internet play, new network game types, and support for almost any platform out there (Mac OS, Mac OS X, Windows, Linux, NetBSD, BeOS, Dreamcast, etc.).

I think M:R is a wonderful initiative; indeed I often find myself thinking "wouldn't it be easier to just port all this to Unreal Tournament or something?". (And in fact IIRC the hi-res M1 textures that are recommended for use with A1 were actually created for M:R.) But the two projects have different goals and different products, so if what you're really looking for is Marathon - funky physics, comic-book sprites, unrealistic lighting, the SPNKR, the ability to use all your old maps and physics models and graphics and sound hacks, etc. - then I think Aleph One is the closest you're going to find to the originals. After all, much of the code in there literally is Marathon 2. But better.
