Unreal wipes half-life away, hl only does static lightmaps, basic dynamic lights, single textures, and simple 3D models with precompiled texture sets...given the color modifier is kinda cool, but they don't even have the connecting polygons like Q3, and simple distance fog, unreal unfortunately also is limited to simple models, but texturing is dynamic, they use connecting polygons, you have animated static lights, proper 3D fog aka volumetric lighting/foging, better directional lighting, higher object count support, real-time skyboxes, true reflections, procedural textures, multitexturing on environments, and the hardware dependency, which is actually better, because it allows the Graphics card to handle all the graphics math which allows the CPU to pay more cycles to physics, HL uses BSP dependent Viewportals, using more central cycles rather than AGP cycles.
