SPEAK YOUR MIND
"Does the distance one travels from center make one more free
to move?"
"No. Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as
metaphor has two parts: form and interpretation. Of course,
the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom,
as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning.
Freedom is being the bricoleur, the mason."

Mars Needs Women

Apart from being my favourite map: to answer the question of why there is a patter buffer and a console in the level: I saw an origional copy of Marathon Beta that a friend stumbled across (yes the leaked version, I admit). Apart from lots of things NOT working, here goes:
In the beta relese, Mars Needs Women had single player ability (involving the switches for the hallways, and altering the transporters in a way I never figured out). The pattern buffers (in any of the 3 other levels) did not work in the beta, neither did the terminals, so I have no idea what went there (59%), but it answers the question to some degree. Like previously said: MNW just would not look right without them though. Recoil could also kill you (never fire a SPNKYR with a wall behind you, one way ticket to a suicide penalty, or run foward), and the Flame thrower was virtually an instant kill (stay away from doors that open from the top).
It was nice to switch to the Demo, and actually have some single player levels that worked (60%), and less bugs, and less sync errors, and fewer colour problems - the list goes on.
"Let Story become Myth
Myth become Legend
Legend be Marathon."
Like the story of the Goldeneye Beta - now that is the way to make a game legendary.
