Maybe we're looking at this the wrong way?

Here's a crazy idea:
Overlay the map on one of the poles laying the "x" coordinates at 120 degrees latitude. The concentric circles become longitude, and the points become positions on the map...
I don't have any tools on my current computer (nor do I have a good image of the Earth from the poles) to do this...anyone out there that can help?
