This "point of origin" allowed you to plot a course in 3D space and the other 6 points represented the end points of three intersecting lines (and their intersection being the destination point). However, the name of the image shown is "Sam Beckett", the character from Quantum Leap. This would suggest that it may be a course plotted through time rather than space (or possibly some combination thereof).
