You have a point about the downloading of the maps and the mod - it does take time on a modem (nearly 6 hours, I left it running overnight). This is also the reason why I won't be seen in any of the online games, a ping greater than 600. Never to mind, there is bound to be someone who plays multi (and just wait until I get it on the Polytech machines!) - and the rest of us can play single.
I have played the ledgendary Marathon - it was installed on the school machines, now I am all grown up the nostaliga returns.
But the best solution to all your worries: Flashget, a download manager. It has served me well.
