Yeah -- the irc.utgames.com server can be a little weird the first time you use it.
In your UT irc client, the server should read "irc.utgames.com"
Sometimes, I find it's easier (when launching it for the first time) to enter an official channel, like #uthelp or #utgames. Once you're in that channel and you see activity, type the following without quotes "/join #mar"
I'll post some of UT's join game/gather game features if people want them. Most UT players don't even know how to do it.
