The Vacheron Constantin Métiers d’Art Les Aérostiers
The HODINKEE Skipper is housed in a 38 millimeter case that incorporates TAG Heuer’s "glassbox" design. The sapphire crystal provides the durability of a modern crystal; however, it mimics the fausses Richard Mille rm 029 geometry of the domed plastic crystals of the 1960s. TAG Heuer had used the glassbox case on the Calibre 18 Telemeter version of the Carrera, as well as some three-hand watches. The leather strap it's delivered on is indeed substantial and channels the WWII look and feel, but I think the watch would be equally as handsome on a modern NATO or canvas strap in drab green or khaki. The case shape and dial aesthetic call out for a modern version of a Bonklip bracelet, and that's something that works with very few watches of today.Brand: Carl F. "If you put in any stock into Patek's motto about never owning a watch, just looking after it for the next generation, I'm kind of embodying that being the custodian of my grandfather's watch, which will at some point be passed down in the family. Now I have a piece that started with me that I'll be able to share with someone in my family at some point."I bought my Day-Date from a vintage dealer that my friend Mailbox, the engineer from Maroon 5, connected me with. He is a huge watch collector, and I know I wasn't getting mine until I went to him with all of my questions. Both Mailbox and Adam Levine are big watch guys but on opposite ends of the spectrum. Mailbox will wait years and years to make a decision on a rare watch. Adam is able to make different decisions. He's like, "I love that. I'm getting that."Brand: NOMOS GlashütteModel: Tangente and Orion neomatik doréReference Number: 192 (Tangente), 397 (Orion)Diameter: 35mm (Tangente), 36.4mm (Orion)Thickness: 6.9mm (Tangente), 8.5mm (Orion)Case Material: Stainless steelDial Color: White, galvanized silver platedIndexes: Printed (Tangente), Applied in gold (Orion)Lume: NoWater Resistance: 5 ATMStrap/Bracelet: Brown Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan
A military issue Seamaster 300? A "lollipop" Speedmaster 2998-1? A Chronometer 30T2? You name it, Somlo’s got it. And, if for some strange reason they don’t, they can almost certainly find it for you. That incredibly rare Speedmaster Mission Case that brings together 23 Speedsmasters? Of course they have one of the 40 ever made. It's not even a question.Lot 3: An Evening of Patek Philippe with Kelly Yoch, Senior Patek Philippe Consultant for North America at Tiffany & Co. Estimate $500-$1000.Given that the recent trajectory of the Laureato has been towards increasingly complicated and haute horology executions like the Absolute Rock and the Absolute Light, it's encouraging to see Girard-Perregaux continue to operate at the steely core of the Laureato, even if we're admittedly still talking about a $13,200 watch. Anyone else feel like onyx is an underplayed move these days? Or just me?Voutilainen, who first caught Baumberger's eye in 1996 while working in restoration at Parmigiani Fleurier, is the perfect individual to serve as the steward for a new generation. Below, he explains his relationship with Urban Jürgensen, his thoughts on Scandinavian watch culture, his business philosophy, and what's coming next.In that spirit, let's get into it. This new watch takes everything we know about the Octo Finissimo line, including past iterations with skeletonized dials, and refines it. The Skeleton 8 Days is cased in 40mm of satin polished rose gold (and is just 5.95mm thick). That case features a matching rose gold crown with a black ceramic insert. When I asked Rich to advise on my collection, he said I should spend "$15,000 to $25,000 on a nice dress watch." Perhaps Rich underestimated my love for dress watches or perhaps I'm just one of those clients who should better heed the advice of his expert advisor, but I decided to spend substantially more on a Cartier Tank Asymetrique in yellow gold, specifically the limited edition of 300 Cartier made in 1996 as part of its CPCP collection.
Daylight Saving Time (DST) is upon us. As you probably know, that means that starting tomorrow, everyone in a time zone that follows the practice of setting clocks ahead an hour at the beginning of Spring will be waking up, and doing everything else, an hour later than usual. What you might not know is that the first modern proposal for Daylight Saving Time came, over a century ago, from an amateur entomologist, who wanted more time after work and before nightfall to catch insects.Up until now, I haven't even mentioned the price of this watch. The Seamaster Railmaster retails for $5,100 on the bracelet and $4,900 on the leather strap. I'm going to go ahead and say Repliky Richard Mille rm 17 that if you're buying this watch, get the steel bracelet. For $200, you would really have to be a fool not to – you can get a comparable or better quality leather strap for about $200, while the bracelet adds hundreds of dollars in value to the watch in my opinion.Measuring 42.5mm across, 13.6mm thick, and 46mm lug to lug, where the SKX007 was an ISO-compliant dive watch, the new SSK Seiko 5s (which were launched in a trio of colorways) are 100-meter water-resistant travel-focused watches with a tension-fit 24-hour bezel, a passive crown, and a Hardlex crystal with a cyclops over the date.SAXEM is just as resistant as sapphire, apparently the difference is in its monochromatic uniformity and shine. This is hard to judge having never seen a SAXEM case next to a Hublot sapphire crystal case, but I believe it. Last year at Watches and Wonders I tried on the yellow SAXEM Big Bang and it was so bright it felt like staring directly into very aggressive fluorescent overhead lighting. On the pre-owned side of the Shop, we've just received an early Hodinkee special edition with our 21st-century reimagining of TAG Heuer's 1970s "Orange Boy." For Speedy fans out there who are ready to roll the dice on something a bit more unique, we have a very cool Casino Dial Speedmaster Date. For sale at an auction house in London, this example has an overall clean look with a full case and fairly even patina to the lume on the dial and hands. There is a slight dark spot in the minute hand but it shouldn't take away from the watch too much.
