Grand Seiko Launches Two New Takes On Nature-Inspired GMTs
McLean, like many collectors, has his favorite local dealers and pawn shops, and he stumbled across this Baume & Mercier Calendar Chronograph during one of his usual trips to browse watches. Yes, it's a rather heavy package, but it wraps well and sits far better than I expected. While I'm speaking from a bias for my own wrist, I'd love to see how a ~37mm version would wear. I enjoy integrated bracelet designs but find they suit my wrist best when they are of a smaller size than what I might prefer for a watch with conventional lugs.The usual suspects, with a few exceptions, are conspicuously absent, which is not only fine with me but inspiring. So often collecting can become an echo chamber of what's trendy. Nora bucks that trend, choosing some conventional silhouettes while maintaining a collection that is playful and unexpected. Only one truly vintage watch does make my heart a little sad, but we can't be all things to all people at all times. There is still a lot of history in each of these pieces.That movement is visible via an exhibition caseback and reveals a laser-etched Easter egg present on each watch. You'll find a highly detailed printing of a nudibranch – a sea creature indigenous to the specific ocean connected to the watch. The movement itself is also decorated with laser printing of the specific body of water. It's not haute horology; it's plain old fun.
The large “rocker cover” motif of HMX’s movement (named after the covers bolted over rocker arms on car engines) proved ideal, however the shape and size of the components meant the solid lume compounds would have to be cut in Switzerland, using CNC machines owned by MB&F. I also still cannot get past the fact that the reading of the chronograph really makes more sense replica iwc horloges with the orange-tipped hands, while the black hands sort of feel foreign in those sub-registers. It's so light that I doubt it's made of steel, though the hollowed "links" may directly account for the lightness. Despite its tiny dial, legibility is pretty good and I could absolutely see someone wearing and enjoying this watch. Not me, as evidenced below, but someone.Seiko states in the release for these watches, that not only are the cases inspired by the classic SKX line (duh), but so are the new bracelets. You might remember that the Seiko 5 Sports dive-style line comes fitted on an Oyster-style bracelet whereas the SKX watches came on the famous, much-loved, and ever-jangly, Jubilee-style. Well, that has returned and Seiko confirms that this new five-row bracelet is directly inspired by the classic SKX.The second watch, "Blizzard," is slightly more comforting in its poetic rendition of winter, with the diamonds set under the sapphire crystal dome depicting snowflakes on the ground, like a snow globe in motion. The crocodile strap is matte, because "the attention should be on the watch, without too much added shine from the croc."
