SPEAK YOUR MIND

"Does the distance one travels from center make one more free to move?"

"No. Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as metaphor has two parts: form and interpretation. Of course, the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom, as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning. Freedom is being the bricoleur, the mason."

The 2020 HODINKEE Talking Watches Tournament, Day 14

The new guy uses Seiko's caliber 8L35, with a 50 hour power reserve; it's a 26 jewel, 28,800 vph motor and should give significantly better performance and longevity than the original's caliber 6105A, which has 17 jewels and runs at 21,600 vph. SLA033 is also a bit larger than the original, at 45mm in diameter, but it feels like an appropriate size for the design; the 6105 after all, in the version being reproduced by SLA033, was a 44mm watch. With that, Mintiens' imagination was off and running. He conceived a new Time by Color system using 48 ceramic balls in four contrasting colors – yellow, light gray, blue, and black – each representing 30 minutes. With only 24 balls visible on the dial at a time, the balls freely flow through a bi-level channel like a string of pearls as the hours pass from morning to afternoon to night, emitting different color combinations depending on the hour.Believe it or not, the North American watch media landscape consists of a relatively small group of individuals; it's hard not to get excited when one of our external colleagues takes a risk and does something cool.Speaking personally, no watch has managed to leave me more on the fence than the blue Pelagos. I love the looks, the lume, the hardcore specs, the titanium, the clasp – billig zenith uhren all of it. But, every time I try one on it feels just a bit too big for my wrist. If I ponied up for a watch like a Pelagos, I'd want to wear it every day, all the time. And while the 42mm width and 14.3mm thickness isn't at all too much for such a capable dive watch, the 50mm lug to lug is long for my seven-inch wrist. The micro-mechanic portion of my education was one of the most challenging and enjoyable parts of my watchmaking education. We used no computers beyond a very basic CAD system for laying out the final design of our movement bridges. All of the work was done with manual lathes, files, gravers, and the enjoyable-to-describe "wobble stick" centering method. Once the watch was completed, it was evaluated. I was graded on the workmanship and the timekeeping of the final product.

The site is divided into three main sections – Community, Watches, and Education – and includes more than 30 articles at launch. More are on the way, of course. The Community section has interviews with various Patek collectors, including our friend Ed Sheeran, who shares why he collects and loves fake richard miller watch Patek. Another interview is an exclusive, detailed discussion with the mysterious father and son team on Instagram known only as Horology Ancienne.Shashi, from Adelaide, Australia, first saw his father's 1980s Tudor Oyster when he was a teenager. When Shashi became interested in watches, his father said, "If you can fix it, you can keep it" – and Shashi sent it off for repair. He got it back right before a meaningful trip overseas, and although it wasn't keeping great time, it comforted him in his travels.Yang's is an earnest collection, one many readers will relate to. I know I did. The only difference is that while many of us have let our first watches slip away, Yang has managed to hang onto his earliest pieces, including an anime tribute to Dragon Ball Z from his Hong Kong childhood. Join us for the watches and stay for the laughs. This is your Talking Watches with Jimmy O. Yang.An astronaut whose earliest watch was a Seiko ref. 6105 – how cool is that? In this episode of Talking Watches we get insight into the childhood of a real-life astronaut and why, despite experiences at great heights, he still has particular affinity for this iconic Seiko that's able to go to great depths. The "extraordinary response" almost downplays how much of a success MoonSwatch has been for Swatch – a success that is almost to the detriment of the product itself. Here's how the Swatch Group describes the MoonSwatch in its financial report for the first six months of 2022:The auction world can be scary, so typically, I look only at models I know well or those that can be traced back with documented provenance or verifiable stories. The Vacheron Constantin ref. 4072 is one of my favorite vintage chronographs. It's basically Vacheron's answer to the Patek 130, but a touch bigger – and better, if I may say. Because it's slightly smaller and a Vacheron, it's seemingly cursed to perpetual underappreciation.

In particular, the grey colorway is one we rarely come across. It's big, it's loud (literally), and it's oddly falsi vacheron constantin orologi satisfying on the wrist. Perhaps it was even too avant-garde for the adventurous minds back then. This model was said to only have been produced in approximately 1,120 examples and only for a couple of years in the early 1970s.AS: My original clocks were very simple. My main goal is always to offer a kinetic sculpture that "gives" time; we are more related to art than to clocks. But to make something used to keep time – to keep time for a family – is important to me.The Formula One has the distinction of being the first collection that was released under TAG Heuer ownership, Heuer fanatic and proprietor of On The Dash Jeff Stein told me, though development would’ve begun before the TAG acquisition. By 1986, Heuer already had more connections to motorsports than the Andretti family, so the acquisition by TAG, which produced parts for Formula One cars, merely sealed the deal for a "Formula One" watch.
