SPEAK YOUR MIND

"Does the distance one travels from center make one more free to move?"

"No. Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as metaphor has two parts: form and interpretation. Of course, the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom, as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning. Freedom is being the bricoleur, the mason."

How Motherhood Changed My Perception Of Time

NOMOS is a nep acne studios divided company with watchmaking taking place in rural Glashütte and the design taking place in the urban hub of Berlin. The two tenets of NOMOS design are, quite clearly, reduction and functionality. It is often assumed that the NOMOS aesthetic is solely influenced by the Bauhaus, the German design school founded in the 1920s, however this is a misconception, as almost all of German design can be traced back to the Bauhaus.Let me introduce you to the Tonda Métropolitane Sélène. It's an automatic ladies’ piece by Parmigiani Fleurier that was released almost a year ago. I was finally able to spend some time with this watch, and, try as I might, I can’t quite identify with it. Maybe I'm jaded, maybe I'm asking for too much, or maybe I'm just not sure of what I want in a watch. But what I do know is that this watch doesn’t speak to me the way so many others do. Now allow me to explain why. While the Freak X Aventurine is a nice addition to the Freak line, it's the Freak S that turns the whole thing on its head. The concept was developed by Carole Forestier-Kasapi, a powerhouse watchmaker who's behind some of the most exciting recent innovations from Cartier and TAG Heuer. Her signature style is all about packing unexpected cutting-edge technology into calibers that retain a bit of traditional elegance.I think there's still so much to experience and so much to learn, she says. "I will have to continue to be curious because, for me, curiosity is such an important quality in watchmaking. Some day I want to have a watch under my own name, a brand under my own name. But until then, I'll keep working to learn and grow."The story goes, as published right here on Hodinkee back in 2018, that after IWC's patent on its 1993 Doppelchronograph – complete with a modern version of the split-seconds complication, designed by Richard Habring – expired, Habring himself unveiled his own new version of the same movement inside the Habring² Doppel 2.0. A few years later he unveiled a newer piece and variation on his work with the watch we are looking at today: the Habring² Doppel-Felix Date.

My first good mechanical watch was, like for many of us, an Omega. It was given to me by my maternal grandfather, a man who I grew up more than admiring – he was my idol. He was a veteran, an entrepreneur, and to me, just the coolest guy in the world. And while he wore other watches in his younger years, nep toteme it was this Omega chronograph that I remember him wearing throughout my adolescence. Each time I would visit him, he would take the Omega off his wrist and let me wear it until I went home.Caliber: Breitling Caliber 82Functions: Hours, minutes, seconds, chronograph, dateDiameter: 30mmThickness: 5.12mm Chronometer Certified: COSC certifiedAdditional Details: Thermo-compensated SuperQuartz movementThis sort of thing changes a person. You begin to look for what feels like more enduring value, like something you can rely on in a pinch – something, in a word, that has stood the test of time and comes out of trials and tribulations with flying colors. And if they're redolent of an era when middle class meant "set for life," instead of "regularly screwed" so much the better. The stage was set for a nostalgia boom unheard of in the annals of watch collecting.Nick Willis would. When the 38-year-old New Zealander lines up to race on August 3, it'll be his fifth appearance on the world's grandest athletic stage. Two previous races ended in medals – both decided by less than one second.

In stainless steel, the Flyback Chronograph Manufacture will set you back $3,995, while the rose gold plated version will retail for $4,295. It’s worth noting the Alpiner 4 Flyback Chronograph, fake omega speedmaster watches from Alpina, started at $4,895 on a leather strap, utilizing the same movement.Brand: IWCModel: Big Pilot's Watch Big Date Edition "150 Years"Reference Number: IW510503 (blue dial), IW510504 (white dial)Diameter: 46.2mmThickness: 15.2mmCase Material: Stainless steelDial Color: Blue or whiteIndexes: Printed Arabic numeralsLume: YesWater Resistance: 60mStrap/Bracelet: Black alligator leather strapOur friends over at Gear Patrol and Hamilton have partnered on a new special edition dive watch that we wanted to share with you. It's the Khaki Navy Scuba Auto Gear Patrol Special Edition, and it's currently available exclusively over at the Gear Patrol Store. Finally, we wrap up the show with a look at the annual Cartier presentation. This is always one of the can't-miss events of SIHH, offering a chance to chat with brand execs and to see the full collection up close. This year there are new Santos models, a revamped Bagnoire collection, and more than a few incredible jewelry pieces, to name just a few of the things we saw. To say this was a highlight of the show for our editors would be quite the understatement. This is valuable data. Even for a normal person who doesn’t enjoy spending half of their weekend suffering on a carbon fiber bike, it’s nice to know how hard your body worked. And, as you exercise more you can easily track your improvement.
