Even trickier is the legal controversy. In response, Rolex has quietly adjusted its marketing strategy. At closed-door tastings for VIP customers, the brand no longer stresses water resistance or accuracy figures, but instead offers a white paper on the financialisation of watches, which explains in detail the secondary market distribution model and tax optimisation options.


When the sunlight becomes a spanner to regulate time, and when the ceramic bezel is transformed into a sandbox for capital flows, the GMT-Master II of 2025 has long since transcended the realm of time-zone tools. It could be the pinnacle of smart mechanical watches or the beginning of the complete financialisation of luxury watches - depending on whether you see the morning and evening lines of the earth or the fluctuating path of a K-chart when you press the ‘Sync’ button.
