Christopher Walken once said, famously, "I've been very lucky in my career, in that, in Hollywood, if you want a Christopher Walken type, you pretty much have to hire Christopher Walken." The Ressence Type 3-3 is like that. Its appeal is very specific, but if it really hits the sweet spot for you in terms of design intelligence and aesthetic impact – well, it's pretty much the only game in town.The watch does have a reprinted dial, which is usually cause for me to turn the other way and keep walking, but this piece is another story. Given the amount of history that this watch has undoubtedly seen, and the special place fake omega speedmaster watches it holds within both Reverso and military watch-collecting circles, I’d suggest looking past the dial in this instance and instead focusing on the bigger picture.The bund strap has its roots in aviation. The German air force, or Bundesrepublik, supplied pilot's watches situated on leather pads to address temperature changes in the air. The other commonly cited reason was to protect pilots in the case of a cockpit fire or crash, where extreme heat combined with a watch's metal case could damage flesh.And yes, I'm aware there were a few kinks in the movement that developed within its first few months – something to be expected of any just-released caliber, especially one with a brand-new architecture – but my understanding is that those have all been worked out. For reference, I've owned my personal Divers Sixty-Five Caliber 400 Limited Edition for HODINKEE for over a year now and haven't experienced a single issue.The leaf hands also catch the light and shadow in an interesting way as well, bisected from center post to tip while always popping against the gradient of the dial. And the final detail was the metal surround on the large date window, correcting an element I thought was missing from the jade dial.

But I've come to recognize the tourbillon as perhaps watchmaking's most beguiling anachronism. And to dismiss it with a heavy hand as an oligarch's personal folly discredits the many mechanically intriguing, intellectually stimulating, and – most importantly – emotionally resonant developments happening in the genre these days.I have always been especially bad at predicting what will be announced at watch trade shows. So imagine me sitting at home in my PJs waiting for an early morning email to come in and announce the new Tudor Pelagos GMT (I was so confident...just like last year). Gold and silver? I sure didn’t see that coming.And that was kind of it. If you know the model range, you know this watch. There's nothing more to say about the 40mm case, the bi-color Cerachrom bezel, the 70-hour power reserve in the chronometer-grade 3285 caliber, or the Rolex bracelets with Easy Link extension. All of that remains. The only thing left for me to do was wear the thing – really experience it. And so I did.
Strip away everything else – the price point, the John Mayer winding a manual-wind Daytona inches from his mic on Talking Watches Part 2 and remarking on the "crunchy" feel and sound, the allure of it all – a vintage Daytona billig omega ure is a flat-out outstanding object.The Rainbow Collection watches, in my view, are both too much and not really enough.
