Well, in Marathon I remember the Pfhor could be killed with 2-3 shots from the .44 MMC and it took 4-5 that to kill them with the M.75 rifle. Thats on normal difficulty.

.338 Lapua Magnum (8.6x70mm) is a sniper round. Since the M:R rifle looks like an OICW (and uses 20mm granades just like the OICW) I think it should use 5.56mm rounds for the rifle part. That could also explain the fact that it holds 52 rounds in one magazine (since 5.56mm is small)!
