SPEAK YOUR MIND

"Does the distance one travels from center make one more free to move?"

"No. Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as metaphor has two parts: form and interpretation. Of course, the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom, as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning. Freedom is being the bricoleur, the mason."

: also i find it amusing that a engine that can create such
: incredibly complex 3d models in an enormous and
: beautiful 3d world cant draw some green and red polys
: and a few blue dots :)

The Marathon engine wasn't actually constructed in 3D. Essentially, the map that you saw in the 'map view' was actually the real map geometry drawn in shades of green.

Each polygon was used to create its ceiling and its floor. if there was a gap between them then the player would see the empty space.

But UT-based games use actual 3D geometry to build the levels so there is no inherent 2D projection of the map. things would really get complicated if the map included teleporters, 5D-space, or parts of the map were scattered around the 3D world (a bit of the map over here, a bit over there... and zone-portals to connect them).
