SPEAK YOUR MIND
"Does the distance one travels from center make one more free
to move?"
"No. Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as
metaphor has two parts: form and interpretation. Of course,
the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom,
as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning.
Freedom is being the bricoleur, the mason."

Jumping and Other things

This being my first trip to Marathon:Ressurrection, I explored the forums thoroughly to see what I'd been missing, since I needed to get a copy of UT before I could even begin to play. And some thoughts occurred to me that I'd like to share:
During the time of the original trilogy, jumping was an impossibility only because of the limitations of the engine. This was during the time of Doom, not Quake. And this was fine: we Marathoners accepted that and learned the magic of frog-blasting even though technically, it didn't physically make sense that we wouldn't be able to do things like jumping and mantling. Now, however, the capabilities are much greater, and jumping and mantling can be encoded. Why, then, should we deny ourselves the capability to do these things? The character is a humanoid with arms and legs that are completely functional, and yet doesn't know how to jump or climb? That goes beyond the boundaries of rational thought.
Granted, there is the running idea that not being able to jump adds to the difficulty factor, but it is my NSHO that Marathon can be just as challenging, just in different ways. Change can be good folks. And life is like riding the bus: it *requires* change. Treating our marines like functional human beings will not detract from the things that make Marathon great.
But don't take my word for it: you make the call.
