SPEAK YOUR MIND
"Does the distance one travels from center make one more free
to move?"
"No. Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as
metaphor has two parts: form and interpretation. Of course,
the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom,
as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning.
Freedom is being the bricoleur, the mason."

Agreed. There's just something about Marathon that's really hard to describe. Personally, I believe it was all about the timing. It was the only decent FPS on Mac for a long time. It definitely had a plot that was darker and way more immersive than anything else available at it's release. However, what really gave it longevity for me was the Netplay! It's fucking unreal how balanced and well thought out the weapons and battle-system were in Marathon. Staying alive in multi-player Marathon took TRUE skill. It wasn't all based on how cheaply you could maneuver a level to gain power-ups (for the most part). Much unlike Unreal or Quake or just about anything else. People tend to be way too cheap in those games by constantly picking up health and the damage multipliers. In marathon, if you stayed alive it was because you dodged attacks cunningly and utilized your weapons to the fullest extent. Bungie just had it right. I'm very excited about Halo, but I'm also disappointed by certain things I've heard about damage multipliers and more health powerups than necessary. Why is it that they feel they needed to add these items? Because it's standard in all other multiplayer games? I liked the idea of the Marathon health rechargers because it wasn't like you could instantly get all of your health back, you had to watch your ass the entire time you were charging. Then again, I guess if some people can't be cheap then they just don't have any fun.
