Put UT air control to 100%, go off a cliff and turn 180% without pushing on the forward key. You're still traveling in your old direction but facing backwards, not moving in the direction you're now facing. In the original Marathon series you'd be moving in the new direction at the same speed as when you jumped off the cliff. In addition, even if you hold down the forward key with 100% air control in normal UT, there's some decel/accel time to account for. It makes for quite a different feel.
